A new version of Teams is here

A new version of Teams will available with a renewed focus on enhanced speed, performance and flexibility to app users.  These updates will provide:

  • Higher overall performance, up to two times faster while using 50% less memory.
  • Enhanced cross-tenant communication and collaboration through the new multi-tenant organizations (MTO) capability.
  • Apply to both Windows, Apple computers, and mobile devices.

***There is a known issue in the New Teams version that doesn’t allow users to create a new team. You will need to revert to the Classic Teams by clicking the three dots at the top of the window and turning off the toggle for New Teams.

Important dates:

  • January 4, 2024 – Everyone at UM System will receive pop-up to switch to the new version of Teams.  You can switch back and forth between the current and new versions as needed by clicking the three dots at the top of the Teams window and turn the toggle off for New Teams.  We recommend giving the new version a try.  There are no problems communicating with others that are on different versions of Teams.
  • March 25, 2024 – Everyone across the UM System will switch from Classic Teams to the new version of Teams automatically.
  • March 31, 2024 – All remaining users of Classic Teams will be automatically updated to New Teams and cannot move back to Classic Teams.  This date is determined by Microsoft and is not something we can control.
