Packing for Fall

If you’re living in on-campus housing, you have may have a few questions as to what you will need for your new home. Check out DoIT’s packing list for what to bring and what to leave behind. And remember to coordinate with your roommate so you don’t arrive on move-in day with duplicates of everything!

What to Bring
  • Laptop
Personalize your laptop with stickers and your name so it is easily recognized. Be sure to register it with MUPD. Don’t forget to pack your power cords!
  • Cell Phone and/or Tablet and Chargers
Don’t forget the chargers! Be sure to check out help.missouri.edu for a list of devices not supported on TigerWiFi.
  • Surge Protector
Residents must use surge protectors with a 15-amp breaker and reset switch. Multi-plug adapters are prohibited.
  • SmartTVs, Gaming, and Entertainment Devices
Any devices must connect to the wired network using an Ethernet cable. Please check your device to see if it has an Ethernet port or if an adapter is available. Check out help.missouri.edu for a list of devices not supported on TigerWiFi. The television must have a QAM tuner to connect to Mizzou Cable. (Check television packaging or find its specifications online.)
  • Ethernet Cable and Adapter (if needed)
Bring a 25-foot Ethernet cable to access the high-speed wired Internet in your room. Using Ethernet is faster and more reliable than wireless, so plug in to do your homework! If your laptop doesn’t have an Ethernet port, bring a thunderbolt adapter or an USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
  • Mizzou TigerCard
Don’t forget your Mizzou TigerCard student ID! Your TigerCard is your pass to eat in the dining halls, the key to your residence hall and possibly to your res hall room. Be careful not to lose it – it’s also your student charge card!
  • Wired Router (optional)
If you are bringing multiple devices (laptops, gaming systems, etc.) a wired router is a good idea. Wireless routers are prohibited in campus buildings.
  • Head Phones (optional)
Give your roommate and neighbors a noise break. Use headphones for gaming and music. Noise canceling headphones can make studying easier in a busy res hall.
  • Printer (optional)
Bringing a personal printer is not necessary. All residence hall groups have campus printers available for student use. Students are granted a $17.50 print allowance per semester, which is about 350 pages (black only). If you think 350 pages will not be sufficient, you may want to consider a personal, wired printer.
What Not to Bring
  • Multi-plug Adapter
Electrical adapters that increase the number of plug-ins on a single outlet are prohibited. Bring a surge protector instead.
  • Digital Cable Converter Box
Digital converter boxes will not connect to Mizzou Cable. The television must have a QAM tuner.
  • Wireless Router
Wireless routers are prohibited in campus buildings. Wired routers are acceptable.
  • Wireless Voice Control Device
Any wireless, voice-controlled devices without an Ethernet port, such as Echo, Google Home, or Apple Home are not supported on TigerWiFi. Be sure any device you bring has an Ethernet port, such as Roku Ultra.
