RCSS Upgrade Featured in Eye on IT Newsletter

The RCSS upgrade was featured in the Fall 2016 Division of IT, Eye on IT newsletter:

Twice as Nice: More Power for Researchers

Research Computing Support Services (RCSS) recently completed a major enhancement to the high-performance computing (HPC) environment, doubling its power. Under the leadership of Director Timothy Middelkoop, HPC supports the cutting-edge research efforts of the University of Missouri and is available to all UM researchers.

Research technology can be very expensive but is often essential for processing large amounts of complex information. In an effort to stretch research dollars and advance scientific discoveries across various disciplines, the Cyberinfrastructure (CI) Council collaborates with faculty and other users of CI to help prioritize purchase decisions and ensure good stewardship of limited funding and resources.

RCSS UpgradeThis strategy informs the work of the RCSS team. They provide the development, support, and management of our centralized research computing environment. Through a collaboration with Dell, Mizzou Advantage, the Office of Research, Graduate Studies and Economic Development, and many individual equipment investors, RCSS was able to almost double the power of the research computing environment at a significant cost saving with a sustainable funding model.

Doubling the power includes capacity dedicated to Biocomputing, working with sensitive (DCL4) data, and an amazing opportunity for students to learn how to use HPC in a specialized area all their own.
