Research Linux Systems Administrator Position at the University of Missouri

The University of Missouri is searching for a Research Linux Systems Administrator to fill a new position that will work closely with researchers to build, customize, secure, and support Linux systems to advance research activities on campus.  As a member of the team you will work on a broad range of projects internally and across campus with opportunities to specialize in a number of areas, which includes science gateways (web servers for the dissemination of research), scientific Linux workstations, interactive computing (Jupyter notebooks and Kubernetes), scientific workflows, and scientific software support.

This position is within the Research Computing Support Services (RCSS) group in the Division of IT, which manages the campus shared research computing, storage, and networking infrastructure and provides computing support, training, and consulting to the University of Missouri research community.  RCSS works to ensure that the campus’ research computing infrastructure meets the growing needs of the community.

Basic Function & Responsibilities

The Research Linux Systems Administrator will provide end user support services to faculty, staff, and students on the use of research computing hardware and software as well as scientific applications, science gateways, and scientific workflows. Responsibilities of this position will include, creating and maintaining training materials for research computing related software and hardware; conducting training; evaluating, installing, upgrading, and maintain scientific software; and consulting with researchers on the development and migration of scientific workflows to web-based science gateways utilizing a high performance research computing environment.

Essential Functions (top five critical functions)

  • Participate as a member of a highly technical and customer-service driven team. Readily share knowledge and training with other staff members, and forge close working relationships with scientific research groups across campus.
  • Install, configure, and maintain multiple Linux systems in support of research computing in a scientific Linux environment for university researchers.  Responsibilities include installation, testing, evaluation and installation of new versions and authorized modifications of the solution’s hardware, operating systems, application-layer, and some database administration work.
  • Secure and monitor systems and consult with researchers, staff, and students on securing applications.
  • Serve as a technical consultant for sponsored research projects that require research computing services.
  • Provide documentation and training to peers, faculty, staff and students in the use of a shared high performance computing environment, the dissemination of research and scholarly works through a web-based science gateway, and associated scientific software.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with the Linux operating system and utilizing the command line interface is required.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with scripting and programming(e.g. Python, Perl, C, R, Julia, or Java) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience with developing and supporting web frameworks including databases (PHP, Apache, MySQL/MariaDB/PostgreSQL) is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative and diverse environment is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Experience with domain specific tools is highly desirable.
  • Experience with configuration management tools (DevOps) and API’s are highly desirable.
  • Experience in an academic research setting is highly desirable.
  • Ability and demonstrated use of source control management tools such as Git are desirable.
