RCSS Team to Attend Supercomputing16 Conference
Nov. 2, 2016 — 
From November 13-18, 2016, the Research Computing Support Services team will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, to attend Supercomputing16 (SC16), the premier international conference for high-performance computing (HPC), networking, storage and analysis. This conference showcases the many ways these technologies lead to advances in scientific discovery, research, education, and commerce. SC attracts more than 10,000 attendees from around the world, bringing together an exclusive group of scientists, researchers, lab directors, and funding program directors from the HPC and networking industry.
According to SC16 General Chair, John West, “SC is really unique among conferences in the HPC community. There is simply no other conference where you can go to talk with every major participant in the HPC vendor community, see the latest research results, get HPC-specific training from the authorities in our field, mentor that next generation of leaders, and attend workshops that will shape tomorrow’s technology agenda. There is also no better opportunity to track down that researcher you’ve been needing to collaborate with or connect with peers in other organizations to find out the cool things they are doing. It sounds a little corny I suppose, but something special happens when more than 10,000 people come together around one topic, and the only place to have that experience in HPC is at SC.” http://insidehpc.com/2016/10/john-west-sc16/
As in previous years, the University of Missouri will be sharing booth space with the Great Plains Network. The booth will be more than twice the size of last year’s booth. University of Missouri Part of NSF-funded Consortium
Oct. 21, 2016 — The University of Missouri is one of the initial collaborating institutions participating in a Research Coordination Network project called, "RCN: Advancing Research and Education Through a National Network of Campus Research Computing Infrastructures – The CaRC Consortium".
The consortium was recently awarded a $750,000 grant by the National Science Foundation to set up a national forum for the exchange and dissemination of best practices, expertise, and technologies to enable the advancement of campus-based research computing activities.

New Nodes Have Arrived!
Sept. 23, 2016 — We're excited about the arrival of 18 new HPC nodes. Here they are in the racks. We will be bringing them online into Lewis4 very soon!
Lewis Training Update
Sept. 14, 2016 — There will be no Lewis training on Wednesday, October 5.
High Performance Computing Upgrade
Sept. 2, 2016 — Research Computing Support is in the process of upgrading and expanding two existing clusters, building 4 new specialized clusters, and decommissioning old equipment and infrastructure. We will be adding more than 100 new nodes (more than 2800 cores and 34 TB of RAM!) and restructuring the networking, storage, and other infrastructure. Please note the following schedule so you can plan accordingly:
Testing Phase: September 1 - September 30
Lewis is being upgraded and is now ready for general testing. We encourage you to try it out before we start the restructuring phase.Restructuring Phase: October 3 - October 11
For much of this time, Lewis will not be available, as we will be restructuring the whole environment in the data center. There will be no Lewis training on Wednesday, October 5.Expansion Phase: October 12 – October 31
We will be migrating equipment and adding new nodes for the remainder of October. As equipment is still arriving, this is subject to change. Watch this space for details.Any new accounts will use the new, upgraded environment. Faculty and researchers can apply for accounts for themselves and their students by completing and submitting the UMBC_Account_Request_Form. The project supervisor must email the completed form to RSC@missouri.edu. Please send a public, secure, shell key that is protected with a strong passphrase (see http://docs.rnet.missouri.edu/HowTo/ssh) along with the application.
Oklahoma Supercomputing Symposium – September 21
Sept. 2, 2016 —
The 2016 Oklahoma Supercomputing Symposium will be held Wednesday, September 21, all day on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus, with a reception/poster session Tuesday evening (September 20), 5:30-7:00pm.
It's a great way to learn what's happening on the advanced computing side of your research and teaching areas.
The Symposium is FREE and comes with meals and snacks, including the FREE reception and poster session the evening of Tuesday, September 20.
There will also be a vendor exposition, where you'll have an opportunity to learn about existing and emerging supercomputing technologies.

It’s about networking, learning about technologies, developing new skills in workshops, meeting new people who may, or may not, have the same interests as you.
This year’s RTD event will be the biggest ever, with more take-away skills, more talented researchers and students coming together, and more of what makes the technology and research community great.

Dr. Timothy Middelkoop Attends XSEDE16 Conference

Dr. Timothy Middelkoop, Director of Research Computing Support and Services, attended the XSEDE16 Conference held in Miami, July 17-21. The fifth annual conference showcased the discoveries, innovations, challenges, and achievements of those who use and support XSEDE resources and services. The theme this year was “DIVERSITY, BIG DATA & SCIENCE AT SCALE: Enabling the Next Generation of Science and Technology.”
The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is a five-year, NSF-funded project that provides the most advanced, powerful, and robust collection of integrated advanced digital resources and services in the world. It is a single virtual system that scientists can use to interactively share computing resources, data, and expertise.
As a “Campus Champion”, Dr. Middelkoop acts as a conduit between the XSEDE community and the University of Missouri. He facilitates educational and training opportunities for our researchers, faculty, students, and staff and helps them make effective use of local, regional, and national digital resources and services.
The first five years of the XSEDE project has been so successful that the NSF has renewed funding for another five years. XSEDE 2.0 will offer even more services to the community that will provide the backbone to a national cyberinfrastructure for researchers, scientists, and engineers.
