April 24, 2017 — The Lewis3 cluster will undergo maintenance on Wednesday, April 26, at 8:00 a.m. We expect it to last until 5:00 p.m. There will be no Lewis3 training that day.
March 29, 2017 — Research Computing Support Services is pleased to announce that Susie Meloro has completed the requirements to become fully certified as a Data and Software Carpentry instructor.
Software Carpentry is a volunteer organization whose goal is to make scientists more productive, and their work more reliable, by teaching them basic computing skills. Founded in 1998, it runs short, intensive workshops that cover program design, version control, testing, and task automation. Data Carpentry is a sibling organization that focuses on data analysis skills rather than programming skills. Their aim is to is to teach people who are wrangling data manually how to automate their work and make it more reproducible.
Research Computing Support Services plans to hold a series of workshops in the near future. Please watch this space for details.

March 6, 2017 — The High-Throughput Computing Storage (HTC) system is now available on the Lewis cluster. It is designed for researchers who need large amounts of long-term storage for high-throughput computation at a low cost. Storage is allocated in blocks and each storage block has its own quota mount point. Storage blocks are prepaid in full in 10TB increments for 5 years. The FY17 rate is $1,200/10TB/60 Months.
Feb. 2, 2017 — Dr. Timothy Middelkoop invites faculty at UMKC to attend his traveling office hours on Monday, February 6, 2017, from 12-1 p.m. at Administrative Center 113. This is an opportunity to discuss anything that is on your mind. No appointment is necessary.

This training covers the basics of the new hardware, how to use the new scheduler, how to use secure shell key-based authentication, and any other questions you may have. Please bring your own laptop.
