Driving IT Innovations: Information Technology Annual Report 2025-2026
Ben Canlas, Chief Information Officer, MU, Vice President for Information Technology, UM System

I am pleased to present the University of Missouri Division of Information Technology and Information Security FY2026 Annual Report. This report highlights the achievements, initiatives, and advancements made by our IT and security organizations over the past year.

Our teams have continued to build on the momentum created through strategic investments in both our people and our technology. Major enhancements to some of our most visible services this year included the continued modernization of Mizzou’s wired and wireless networks, the development and deployment of secure artificial intelligence tools that support teaching and learning, and ongoing investments that strengthen the UM System’s cybersecurity, compliance and information security programs.

As we look toward FY2027, we remain committed to advancing technology in support of the mission, goals and priorities of the University of Missouri, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Missouri University of Science and Technology, and MU Health Care.

Our enterprise goals for the coming year include:

  • Enhancing the technology experience for faculty, staff, and students
  • Partnering with university departments to maximize the value of technology investments
  • Supporting research through innovative infrastructure, platforms, and services
  • Continuing to improve the procurement and delivery of software and technology solutions
  • Leveraging AI to improve performance, enable efficiency, and drive innovation
  • Fostering stronger relationships with faculty, staff, and students across the UM System

These priorities reflect our broader commitment to delivering technology that empowers people, strengthens our institution, and advances our shared mission. Through thoughtful planning, strategic investments, and strong partnerships, we will continue developing solutions that create meaningful impact for the university community.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our IT teams for their dedication, expertise, and hard work. Their commitment to service and innovation makes our success possible, and they remain our greatest asset as we continue to evolve and grow.

I also extend my gratitude to our university leadership, faculty, staff, and students for their continued partnership, collaboration, and feedback. The most successful technology initiatives are built together, and your engagement helps ensure that our work remains aligned with the needs of the communities we serve.

As we look to the future, I am excited by the possibilities ahead. Together, we will continue to harness the power of technology to expand opportunities, accelerate innovation, and support student success while advancing our system’s mission of excellence in education, research, service, and engagement.

Information Technology (IT) services are provided across the University of Missouri System by five IT departments, including one at each university, as well as MU Health Care. This report provides information about the state of IT for all our UM System universities, MU Health Care and the Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet).

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is a combined UM System and MU Information Technology organization providing all technology services to MU, as well as system-wide shared services to all UM universities. These system-wide services include the Peoplesoft HR/Financials/Student Information Systems, Information Security program (but not the personnel), data warehousing, document management, and Microsoft email and productivity applications.

UMKC, UMSL and Missouri S&T also have their own CIOs and IT organizations charged with meeting the specific technology needs of their campus and of their faculty, staff and students. MOREnet provides the state-wide data network for many of Missouri’s public sector entities, including K-12 schools, colleges and universities, public libraries, health care and other affiliated organizations. MU Health Care’s IT needs are provided through a contractual agreement with Oracle Cerner.

All IT units work together to leverage economies of scale, establish standards and collaborate on important technology projects.
