MOREnet Celebrates 35 Years
Organized as a membership consortium in 1991, UM System’s Missouri Research and Education Network (MOREnet) has been marking this exciting milestone with value and impact stories from many of its more than 700 members illustrating MOREnet’s successful role in connecting communities, supporting education and research and innovating with technology for the last 35 years.
SCinet Team Supports 2025 Supercomputing Conference in St. Louis
As the state research and education network for the event’s host state, MOREnet provided staff and networking services to help build and operate the world’s fastest temporary network for this international high-performance networking conference, which drew nearly 16,000 attendees over the week. Participating on the all-volunteer SCinet teams provides an excellent, hands-on learning opportunity and the team-building spans the globe.
Eduroam Expansion
Eduroam is a secure, global, roaming wireless access service that enables authenticated Wi-Fi access for students, educators, staff and researchers from any eduroam-affiliated institution. All UM System universities have offered eduroam access for several years. As of January 2026, MOREnet is an official Internet2/InCommon eduroam Support Organization (eSO); one of only 11 states to provide this essential role to successfully launch eduroam access for its K-12 and public library members statewide. More than 40 MOREnet member locations are now eduroam-enabled, and this number is expected to grow exponentially in FY27.
Upgrade MOREnet Statewide Fiber Network
MOREnet will upgrade the equipment on its statewide fiber network to increase network capacity from 100 Gbps to 400 Gbps. The upgrades will improve network resiliency and strategically position MOREnet to move to 800 Gbps capacity in the future without significant costs or member impact.
Ensure Quantum Networking Readiness
The impending power of quantum computing is threatening decades of sensitive public key encrypted data once considered invulnerable. At the other end of the cybersecurity spectrum, quantum networking uses physics rather than mathematical formulas to ensure Quantum Key Exchanges (QKE) for encryption/decryption that cannot be intercepted or eavesdropped. MOREnet is helping its members move to post-quantum secure methods and technologies today to protect their critical information. To build local, regional and national test beds for quantum networking, MOREnet is working with pioneering researchers as well as the regional Great Plains Network (GPN) and other peer Research and Education Networks (RENs).
Partnering with Sandia National Labs, MOREnet is beginning to build a Missouri pipeline for quantum workforce development. Starting with K-12 STEM teachers in an immersive 2026 summer camp, MOREnet is preparing instructors to teach quantum concepts and quantum computer programming to K-12 students. The goal is to position MOREnet and the university to quickly develop a quantum-ready workforce, ensure students are prepared for quantum research and degree programs and provide a shared testbed for quantum networking research to fully participate in the anticipated national quantum research network.
Complete LEO Satellite, 5G Wireless Pilots
MOREnet will begin a six-month proof of concept project to test Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite and 5G wireless service solutions. These solutions will serve as backup or secondary connectivity options for existing fiber broadband connections, enabling low-cost, redundant connectivity options for our members that rely on uninterrupted Internet access for their local users.
