UMKC Accomplishments and Goals – 2026 Report

Convened AI Task Force
The UMKC AI Task Force was convened by Provost Lundgren in fall 2025 in response to the growing impact of artificial intelligence technologies on teaching, research, administration, operations and workforce preparation. The task force was charged with conducting a structured review of existing resources, tools, policies and practices across four focus areas: Academic Experience, Research and Innovation, Business Operations, and Community and Economic Development. Through this work, the task force identified key opportunities and gaps and developed actionable recommendations to strengthen the university’s AI capabilities and readiness over the next one to three years.

Support Infrastructure Updates Across Campus
More than 50 construction projects are currently underway, including three new or complete building renovations. Additionally, teams are updating the network in multiple buildings. We’re expanding the network as a service option, have expanded WiFi in outdoor and common spaces, increased depth and breadth of WiFi coverage as part of our life cycle replacement processes.

Launched Conversational AI Support Chatbot
Developed and launched KCRooBot, a conversational AI chatbot with live chat support available on the TeamDynamix Client Portal and IS website. KCRooBot can answer questions from a knowledge base trained on IS Technology Resources web pages and TeamDynamix Service Catalog, submit a ticket on behalf of a customer directly in chat, and transfer customers to live chat support with a Technology Support Center technician.

Digital Accessibility
UMKC has made significant progress in advancing digital accessibility by launching action teams, including a focus on IT applications and procurement, while establishing a regular enterprise-wide coordination and reporting structure. The university has helped shape systemwide accessibility policies and compliance processes, developed a comprehensive vendor accessibility review program integrated with procurement and security workflows, and implemented tools such as VPATs, HECVATs, accessibility risk questionnaires, and risk-tracking mechanisms to monitor compliance efforts. In addition, UMKC has expanded accessibility training and awareness initiatives through both UM System and campus-based programs and has embedded ongoing accessibility reviews into software procurement and backlog management processes to support sustained compliance and continuous improvement.

Implement AI Task Force Initiatives
In FY27, UMKC will focus on implementing the first year of actions identified by its AI Task Force, advancing the responsible and strategic use of artificial intelligence across university operations.

Expand AI-Enabled Communication Tools
UMKC will continue to enhance its communications capabilities by introducing additional AI-powered functionality. Planned improvements include advancing phone system capabilities and expanding texting solutions to increase responsiveness, improve engagement with students and stakeholders, and streamline communication workflows.

Enhance Wireless Network and AV Infrastructure
The university will strategically invest in wireless networking and audiovisual technologies to improve reliability, performance, and user experience across campus. These enhancements will support the growing technology needs of students, faculty, staff, and campus events while creating more connected and collaborative learning and working environments.

Complete Cloud-Based Voice Migration
UMKC will complete the transition from its on-premises VoIP phone system to a cloud-based solution. This migration will provide greater flexibility, scalability, and resiliency while modernizing communication services and reducing reliance on legacy infrastructure.

Support Major Construction Projects
IS will play a critical role in several major campus construction and renovation projects. UMKC will complete major projects including reopening the Atterbury Student Success Center, opening the new Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building, beginning a major renovation of the Administration Center and starting the addition on the Performing Arts Center.

Re-imagine Computer Lab Environments
We will create innovative computer lab environments that serve a variety of student expectations and desires. As computer labs reach end-of-life and equipment comes off warranty, the university will analyze utilization data to determine where traditional workstations can be reduced and replaced with a mix of collaborative workspaces, laptop docking stations, kiosks, configurable learning areas, and movable furnishings.
