Copilot updates: Claude now available; app integration changes in Basic version
Published on

The Division of IT recently enabled the use of Anthropic’s Claude models within Microsoft Copilot (Premium). The addition of Claude models creates new options that can help with writing, research, analysis, summarizing information and content development.
If you have a paid Copilot (Premium) license, you will see Claude in supported Copilot experiences such as Researcher, New Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
Which license do I have?
- Copilot (Basic) is provided at no cost to all Mizzou faculty, staff and students. You will see which license you have in the lower left side of your Copilot dashboard once you’ve logged in at copilot.microsoft.com.
- Copilot (Premium) is a paid service that adds additional Copilot features directly to Microsoft 365 apps. This paid, elevated license is available for purchase by faculty and staff and includes Copilot experiences inside Microsoft 365 apps via help.missouri.edu or viewable in the software directory.
Changes to Copilot (Basic)
If you are a Copilot (Basic) user, you may have noticed that the Copilot icons are no longer available in common apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. That’s because Microsoft recently implemented changes to remove these integrations. However, Copilot integrations still work in Outlook, and nothing has changed for users who access Copilot online at copilot.microsoft.com.
If integrations in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OneNote are important to your workflows, consider upgrading to the Premium version of Copilot by visiting the Division of IT’s software directory.
While the integrations have been removed for Basic license users, this Microsoft article explains how to add content to Microsoft 365 Copilot prompts. This is a workaround option for users who do not wish to upgrade to a Premium license.
How do I access Copilot (Basic)?
- Step 1: Go to copilot.microsoft.com
- Step 2: Select the “work” option
- Step 3: Log in with your Single-Sign On
- Step 4: Once you are taken to the Copilot dashboard, verify that you see a green checkmark/shield icon in the upper right of the window. This means you are using the University’s protected and licensed version of Copilot.
How do I buy Copilot (Premium)?
Visit help.missouri.edu to learn more about purchasing a Copilot license. Note: Log in using your Single-Sign On credentials to access the page.
