Two options are available and approved to generate automated meeting summaries during virtual meetings.
Zoom AI Companion
Zoom AI Companion is provided as part of our university license and is available through the Zoom application at no charge. AI Companion features available to UM System users during Zoom meetings include:
- In-meeting questions
- Smart Recording, including meeting coaching tips
- Meeting Summary
While these features are available in our account, they are not required for use. AI Companion tools can be turned on or limited by visiting umsystem.zoom.us and signing in with SSO. You can then select Settings > AI Companion to determine how AI Companion will be used in the meetings you host.
For more information about adjusting these settings and the features available, watch this video from Zoom.
Note that due to additional security requirements, Zoom AI Companion has not been approved for use in virtual meetings under the umsystemprotected.zoom.us domain, which includes MU Health Care, the MU School of Medicine, the MU Sinclair School of Nursing and the MU College of Health Sciences.

The use of other AI meeting transcription services, such as Read.AI, are not approved for use on university computers or for work by university employees. These transcription services have not met IT compliance requirements and could pose privacy or security concerns. Otter.AI is not approved for general use unless you have requested and received IT approval.
If you attend a virtual meeting and receive an email to use an AI transcription service like Read.AI, please ignore the email. If you have already signed up for Read.AI or a similar service, please reach out to your IT Pro with the MU Division of IT.
Thank you for your support in keeping the university’s IT systems and information secure.
