Full Disk Encryption
The Division of IT offers Full Disk Encryption services to help protect data on a laptop or desktop computer in the event it is lost or stolen.
Encryption is a way to enhance the security of a message or file by scrambling the contents so that only someone with the right encryption key can unscramble and read it. Full Disk Encryption encrypts all the files on your hard drive, which can then be accessed only by someone with the right authentication key.
Departments that work with highly sensitive information such as e-Commerce data, protected health information (PHI), biometric data, or national security interest (NSI) data are required to install full disk encryption. For all other data types, full disk encryption is strongly recommended.
Full Disk Encryption services are available to UM and MU faculty, staff and students with a department’s approval.
The University recommends the use of centrally managed Microsoft BitLocker Administration Monitoring (MBAM) for any systems running Windows 7 or 8. For Mac OS, we recommend using FileVault.
For more information regarding encryption standards, refer to the UM System Encryption Standards page.
Please contact your departmental IT Pro for fee information and how to enroll in the service.
