Assistive Technology is software or hardware used to compensate for physical or sensory limitations and help people accomplish specific tasks.

Examples of how assistive technology can help:

• Viewing or navigating the computer (vision)
• Comprehending and understanding when reading (learning)
• Typing with speech (motor/physical)

The IT Accessibility Center provides consultations for anyone with a permanent or temporary disability to help assist in making informed choices about technology and to find cost-effective ways to meet their needs.

The evaluation will take into consideration:

• Medical information
• Functional abilities
• Functional limitations
• Technology skills
• Environment (school, office, or home)
• Goals for your education, career, and/or daily activities

Examples of assistive technology that may help:

Hardware

• Alternative keyboards (large print, ergonomic, split, etc.)
• Magnification devices
• Speech output systems
• Alternative mice (trackballs, upright, etc.)

Software

• Text-to-speech
• Speech-to-text
• Magnification
• Braille conversion

All consultations are confidential and are no charge. Consultations can be scheduled for an online (Zoom or Teams) meeting or in-person meeting at the IT Accessibility Center, located on the lower level, north side of Memorial Union in N17. Evaluations typically take anywhere from 30 -60 minutes.
