ChatGPT – Generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT can generate human-like conversational responses and enables users to refine and steer a conversation towards a desired length, format, style, level of detail, and language. ChatGPT is built on OpenAI’s proprietary series of generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models and is fine-tuned for conversational applications using a combination of supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback.
UM System has procured the centralized license for ChatGPT and UMKC Information Services (IS) department is making it available for purchase to all University of Missouri campuses (not approved for MU Health Care). Please note the request form will display UMKC as the procuring entity.
Single Sign-On: This software utilizes single sign-on (SSO) allowing users to sign in using their University of Missouri credentials (username@umsystem.edu).

Not Approved for MU Health Care – Note: Due to enhanced security requirements, ChatGPT is not approved for use at MU Health Care, the MU School of Medicine, the MU Sinclair School of Nursing and the MU College of Health Sciences. Individuals in these areas, as well as anyone who accesses protected health information, should refrain from using or purchasing ChatGPT while the software is under review.
How to Order
Faculty and staff may acquire licenses by utilizing the button below to access the service portal. On the right, please select the “License Order” option. It is important to note that UMKC is listed on the request form, as they oversee the central license. Upon submission, the form will proceed through the necessary fiscal approval process for the purchase.
Activation Details: Once the request has been processed, the user will receive an email invitation from Open AI with instructions and a link to join the workspace. TDX emails Requestor and user that license has been assigned. UMKC IS Procurement submits charges for fiscal journal entries (JE) against license MoCodes every month.
How Do I Login?
- Go to ChatGPT and click Log In
- Use your SSO@umsystem.edu for the email address and click Continue
- Select “UM System” under “How do you want to log in?”
- Continue the sign-in process using your UM System credentials
License Policy
Chat GPT is approved for up to DCL3–Restricted data classification.
All licenses are based on the stated license period, regardless of the date they were purchased. This means that in order to maintain access, they must be renewed annually. Please ensure you keep track of your renewal dates to avoid any interruptions in service.
It is the policy of the University of Missouri to honor software license agreements and to require all users to do likewise. The Division of Information Technology will not knowingly assist, or permit its equipment to be used, in violation of such agreements. The software must not be copied for someone else or loaned to someone else for them to copy.
The license agreement expires upon the termination of the user’s affiliation with the University of Missouri.

What if I already have an individual ChatGPT account?
All University individuals’ ChatGPT accounts should be migrated to the new UM System Education workspace. This ensures that University data is protected and not used for training purposes. In order to switch to the UM System Education workspace you must purchase a license by submitting the AI License Order form and then cancel your individual ChatGPT license.
If you created a personal ChatGPT account using your @umsystem.edu account, you will be prompted to choose to transfer or discard existing data in your personal workspace when joining the Education workspace.
If you created a personal ChatGPT account with an @missouri.edu email address, there is no direct migration path within ChatGPT. It is recommended to have a bit of overlap so you can transfer any settings or past conversations between your old workspace and the UM System workspace.
How to migrate conversations from ChatGPT?
There are no direct migration options within ChatGPT, but it is possible to transfer individual conversations between workspaces.
- Under your old workspace, for each conversion you want to transfer, click on Share
- Share the conversation with your UM System workspace account (sso@umsystem.edu)
- Under the UM System workspace, reply to the shared conversation so it will save it.
How is the university’s version of ChatGPT different from the public version?
UM System has purchased an Education version of ChatGPT that includes additional data protections for University data. It also has a lower price point than individual licenses.
