Phishing Scams

Phishing scams are emails that try to trick you into giving your personal information, like passwords or credit card numbers. You should never reply or click on a link in a message that asks for personal information. If you get an email from a known source, such as your bank or credit card company, then type their web address directly into your browser instead of clicking on the link provided.

The university will never call, text, or email you asking for your password or Multi-Factor Authentication code. Should you get a request for either, please report it immediately to security@missouri.edu

What can I do about phishing scams?

Use the report message option in Outlook to automatically report the phishing email to our security team.  This can be found on the menu bar within Outlook. Reporting helps prevent scams from spreading and better protects our organization.

What do I do if I am a victim of a phishing scam?

If you are a victim of a phishing scam and provided credentials, you will need to reset your password immediately. If this vulnerability relates to your University account, you are required to report the incident. Please contact your Information Security Officer to do so.

Can’t tell if the email is phishing?

When in doubt, send the email as an attachment to security@missouri.edu and we will take care of it.
