Web Hosting, Departments

Web Hosting, Departments

The Division of IT offers web hosting for departments on both Linux/Apache and Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) platforms.

A hosting account is available for departments and organizations for a monthly charge based on the space required and will be charged to a departmental MoCode. See PRICING for the most current rates.

Depending on your needs, you can choose one of three types of websites:

Linux/Apache Websites: Websites requiring the Linux operating system on an Apache web server. Please note that the Cascade web content management system (see below) is a separate service.

Microsoft IIS Websites: Websites running Microsoft-based web applications and standard web page hosting; sites using Cascade, the campus content management system (see below), cannot be hosted on IIS.

All Web Hosting services offered by the Division of IT include the following:

  • Web development and production environments
  • Web server configurations that provide redundancy and fail-over in case of hardware failures or disasters to keep your website downtime to a minimum.
  • System monitoring available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
  • Access to technical staff training in Internet Administration to assist with troubleshooting and consulting
  • Backup and restoration service
  • The ability to download server logs for analysis with other tools

Content-Managed Websites: Cascade Content Management System (CMS) is a web-based application for website creation and editing. You can edit your website from any computer that has access to the Internet.

Cascade CMS provides the tools to create Asset Factories, taking full advantage of reusable code. You build your site piece-by-piece rather than page-by-page. That gives you more precise control overall. Asset Factories allow you to create any number of pages that all share the same layout, look and feel.

You can also delegate page creation and editing to non-technical users. The WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editing interface allows them to type as though they were using a standard office editor. However, you retain control over style elements and page layout. The end result is a professional website that adheres to MU's visual identity standards.

Please note that Cascade is a separate web hosting service and generally uses separate web servers. In most ways, these web servers are similar to the Apache/Linux option described above.

Cascade CMS service is free of charge and can be requested by contacting the Digital Communications team in Mizzou Creative.

Linux/Apache Departmental or organizational websites will be billed at $9.00/site/GB/month.
