Domain Name Management

Domain Name Management

The Division of IT manages the Domain Name Service (DNS) and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for the MU campus.

An IP address is a unique identifying number given to any machine connected to the Internet. A domain name is a three-part alias for a numeric web address (for example, www.missouri.edu). On the Internet, IP addresses are invisibly translated into a domain name for ease of use.

MU currently hosts more than 100 domains for various campus departments and student organizations. The Division of IT manages these domains at no charge. This protects the University's investment in the names, maintains continuous domain ownership, and ensures that domains do not accidentally expire.

The Division of IT coordinates the ownership and renewal of these names with domain name registrars, the organizations that sell domain registration and other associated services to the public. While hosting of the domain name is free, there is an annual fee associated with registering or transferring a domain name. See PRICING.

Domain names are managed by domain name registrars. The Division of IT will coordinate the ownership, and renewal of these names with those organizations.
