Email List Services

Email List Services

Email discussion and distribution lists are a popular way to communicate with a group of people who share a common interest. Subscribe to a list or create your own and receive all messages sent to the list, adding your own thoughts when you like.

Mailing lists are collections of email addresses that can be used for announcements, group discussion, course communication, or as a distribution list. Lists may be public or private.

  • Discussion lists can be open to anyone with an email address or limited to certain users, at the list owner's discretion.
  • Exchange Distribution lists are limited to members of the University email system.

Discussion Lists

LISTSERV Email List Management maintains discussion lists that can include University and non-University participants. Go to doitservices.missouri.edu to request a new list. Login to the self-service portal with your University user id and password, select Service Catalog, and search for Listserv. Subscribe to a list or create your own and receive all messages sent to the list, adding your own thoughts when you like.

Exchange Distribution Lists

Use a distribution list for University purposes like class discussion, departmental communication, or mass email.

  • A simple Exchange Distribution list is owned and maintained by an individual. The list owner adds and deletes members as appropriate. Instructions for creating and maintaining Exchange Distribution Lists are available from Online Tech Support at doitservices.missouri.edu.
  • Custom Exchange Distribution Lists are used when you need a larger, targeted audience. In general you will have a custom distribution list created in conjunction with a mass email request. There are times when you may need a custom distribution list created and maintained. The Division of IT makes that service available for a fee.

LISTSERV Discussion List - No charge. A LISTSERV is created and maintained by an individual list owner and may contain University and non-University email addresses.

Exchange Distribution List - No charge. This list is created and maintained by an individual list owner.

Custom Exchange Distribution List  - Created by Accounts Management in the Division of IT. Populating the list is $75/hour with a 1/2 hour minimum ($37.50).

List Maintenance - Permanent distribution lists are typically owned and maintained by a departmental IT Pro or other department representative. Additional assistance from the Division of IT is available on a fee for service basis.

Note: In FY22 changes were made to the way some IT costs are distributed to the capus. We've added IT costs for some our services to the MU Allocation Model. As a result of the change, all expenses included in the FY22 MU allocation model are assigned to each entity based on their percentage of expenses to the total and then that amount is deducted from their annual General Revenue Allocation. For example, if the School of Music accounts for 10% of overall expenses, they will be assigned 10% of the IT expenses and the GRA allocation is reduced accordingly. This reduction is done BEFORE the allocation is transferred to the entity.

**Please Note: Data Network monthly charges are included in the allocation model, but activation and installation charges still apply.
