Encoding Services

Currently, the Division of Information Technology does not offer capturing and encoding services. If you have content needing to be converted, contact ASC. ASC will convert content into Windows Media files that will stream via a variety of supported browsers and platforms. Once ASC transforms the files, they will pass that content on to the Division of IT to store and stream accordingly.

For video related to teaching and learning, ET@MO staff are available to help faculty learn how to encode their own content using their own equipment or ET@MO's technology studio.

Customers using Windows XP may download Windows Movie Maker 2.1 and use the default settings to capture and edit video.

Encoding Your Own Content

If you opt to encode your own content, you must use the following standards:

  • Audio Codec: Windows Media 9
  • Video Codec: Windows Media 9
  • Resolution: 320 x 240
  • Transfer Rate: 300 Kbps or less (combined)
  • Frames Per Second: 15-30
  • File Extension: .ASF, .WMV or .WMA
Typically, a .WMV file encoded via the above-listed recommendations yields a 130 MB file equating to approximately one hour of content. One gigabyte of space will store seven or eight one-hour files.

Note: Customers must maintain the appropriate copyright and release forms for their content.
