Web Authoring Resources

There are a number of useful Web authoring sites focused on graphics, Dreamweaver, Web accessibility, Web site design, META tags, server side includes (SSIs) and scripting, among other topics. World Wide Web Consortium

  • The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to increase the value of the Web as a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding.

Software Download Sites

  • The Division of IT Software Distribution Site hosts applications, patches, and updates. This includes applications for anti-virus protection, FTP and e-mail.
  • Cnet's Download.com offers freeware and shareware applications for the Internet, business, multimedia, design, Web development, utilities and drivers. SecureFX, which we use in our IT Training Web Authoring courses, is available here, although the license is not free. (You can download it for free from the Software Distribution Site.)
  • Digicraft Software's Web Notepad is a freeware Web Notepad application used in our Web Authoring Fundamentals and XHTML courses.

General Web Authoring

  • Webmonkey: The Web Developer's Resource. A how-to library for authoring, design, multimedia, e-business, programming, and jobs. Also includes a JavaScript Library, HTML Cheatsheet, Special Characters library, Color Codes, Browser Chart, Stylesheet Guide, UNIX Guide and Glossary.
  • Dynamic Drive: DHTML scripts for the real world, plus answers to FAQs, book references, etc.
  • The Web Developers Virtual Library: Articles on Web authoring (ASP, DHTML, HTML, Flash, XML, CSS, CGI, JavaScript, Java, PHP, etc.), design, graphics, software, Internet (domains, e-commerce, security, etc.), and other resources.
  • MU Web Communications Homepage: Design tools, templates and best practices.
  • HTML Goodies: HTML primers and tutorials, downloads, CSS properties, VBScript keywords, JavaScript, CGI, ASP, DHTML, Java and XML.
  • XHTML: Current recommendations and drafts of the XHTML specification, as well as book references, mailing lists and newsgroups.
  • XML: Articles, buyer's guide, FAQs, newsletter, jobs, user guides and book references.
  • XML.ORG: Articles, buyer's guide, FAQs, newsletter, jobs, user guides and book references.

Web Site Design

  • Lynda.com helps media designers & communicators understand how to use professional tools and design to enhance visual communication through Web, print, and motion graphics. They sell current materials/resources, although older materials are free.
  • Digital-web.com: The Web designer's online magazine of choice, featuring articles, tutorials, interviews, conference information, book and product reviews, classifieds and additional resources.
  • Online version of the Web Style Guide, 2nd Edition by Patrick Lynch and Sarah Horton. The book is all about Web design, including philosophy, interfaces, site organization, page layout, graphics, multimedia and animation.

META Tags

Server Side Includes

  • Big Nose Bird provides everything you need to build great Web sites, including an HTML tag guide, information on image maps, Apache Web servers, server side includes and graphics, free scripts, a bulletin board, and a newsletter.

Scripting for the Web

  • The JavaScript Source provides an excellent JavaScript resource with tons of "cut and paste" JavaScript examples, all for free! Categories include: buttons, calculators, calendars, clocks, cookies, forms, games, navigation, scrolls, etc.
  • JavaScript.com is another JavaScript site, offering a multitude of resources including book references, free code, links to sites with more scripts, newsletters, etc.
  • Perlfect Solutions offers free and custom CGI programming, articles, and discussions on several subjects, such as CGI Environmental Variables.
  • The Common Gateway Interface, or CGI, is a standard for external gateway programs that interface with information servers such as HTTP servers. This site contains an introduction to the use of CGI programs.
  • The O'Reilly Network is a portal for developers interested in open and emerging technologies, including new platforms, programming languages, and operating systems. Just like O'Reilly & Associates' books, this site provides clear, in-depth, and consistent technical information for expert developers. It also is an interactive forum for the O'Reilly developer community.
  • The Comprehensive Perl Archive Network offers all things Perl including modules, scripts, binary distributions, code, documentation and FAQs.
  • Matt's Script Archive, Inc. offers free CGI and PHP scripts. You can quickly create guest books, Web boards, counters, forms, search engines, animations and cookies.
  • PHP Net: PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that can be embedded into HTML. If you are new to PHP, try the introductory tutorial.
  • Zend Technologies is a leading Web infrastructure software company and an internationally recognized authority in PHP. This site offers everything you ever wanted to know about PHP and more.
