Adobe InDesign CS4

The recommended path through InDesign training

Adobe InDesign courses begin with the InDesign CS4 Introduction & Basic Documents class, followed by Modifying & Finalizing Basic Documents.

After the Modifying & Finalizing Basic Documents class, the remainder of the classes may be taken in any order.

InDesign is one of the preferred software programs by MU Printing Services. For more information on preferred workflow with documents, please visit the MU Printing Services Preparing Jobs Web page.

These classes are available on both PC and Macintosh. If you wish to use a Mac, please inform the instructor when you arrive for the class.

InDesign CS4 1: Introduction & Basic Documents Register
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Understand printing workflow.
  • Use the Adobe InDesign environment
  • Create a new document
  • Add basic elements to a layout
  • Specify and apply custom colors
  • Position elements precisely
  • Thread text between text frames
  • Add jump lines
  • Modify columns in a text frame
  • Use the Paragraph Formatting Controls
  • Create and edit paragraph and character styles

PREREQUISITES:
General knowledge of the Windows or Macintosh operating environment

InDesign CS4 2: Modifying & Finalizing Basic Documents Register
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Create a facing-pages document
  • Create and apply master pages
  • Position text in text frames
  • Add Photoshop images to documents
  • Adjust text wraps
  • Modify graphics
  • Create and use layers
  • Print documents
  • Export documents to PDF
  • Prepare documents for commercial printing

PREREQUISITES:
InDesign CS4: Introduction & Basic Documents.

InDesign CS4 3: Layout & Advanced Typography Register
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Create tint and gradient swatches
  • Create and place library items
  • Create and edit vector and clipping paths
  • Wrap type on a path
  • Manually resize type
  • Create a nested style
  • Create path based text wraps
  • Create a type mask
  • Precisely control leading
  • Control hyphenation and justification
  • Adjust tracking and kerning
  • Create typography shortcuts

PREREQUISITES:
InDesign CS4: Modifying & Finalizing Basic Documents

InDesign CS4 4: Tables, Long Documents & Books Register
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Select and use layer comps in Photoshop files
  • Create lighting effects and adjust transparency
  • Define and use object styles
  • Transform objects
  • Convert text to a table
  • Create a table
  • Modify table structure
  • Format a table
  • Create column, frame, and page breaks
  • Section a document
  • Automatically generate table of contents
  • Automatically generate index
  • Combine documents into a book
  • Insert and format footnotes

PREREQUISITES:

InDesign CS4 5: Advanced Setup & Publishing Register
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  • Use Document Presets
  • Create placeholder objects
  • Save a document as a template
  • Create customized versions of a document by merging data
  • Define a spot color
  • Create process and spot colors
  • Delete and replace swatches
  • Create mixed inks
  • Colorize a grayscale TIFF or JPEG image
  • Use the Links panel
  • Add interactivity to an InDesign document
  • Add movies and sounds to documents
  • Export documents as interactive PDF files
  • Export documents as XHTML for Web use
