*The Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) bills off-campus subscribers a mileage fee which is determined by the customer's off-campus location plus the distance between that location and the Remote Switching Center (RSC). VoIP subscribers do not pay mileage fees. Availability and ConsultationVoIP service is available in most on-campus buildings and in off-campus locations that are connected back to the University via fiber. Specially-trained telecommunications staff will set up a consultation that will include a side-by-side cost comparison of traditional phone service rates versus VoIP rates.MobilityVoIP phones may be moved within a single building location. Contact the Division of IT before moving any VoIP phone. Mobility within buildings allows customers to change phone locations as needed and alleviates the costs associated with dispatching a technician.Emergency 911 ServiceWhen a 911 call is placed using VoIP, the address passed to the emergency operator is the location, including floor and room number, where the original VoIP phone was installed. It is extremely important for customers to contact the Division of IT before moving VoIP phones within a building so that the 911 records can be updated. The Division of IT requires each VoIP subscriber to read and sign the E911 Disclosure and Acknowledgement before service is installed. Details regarding VoIP and 911 service are covered during the consultation. 911 emergency calls may not be available in the following situations:
