Division of IT: Telecom Services

Two-Way Radio Services

The Division of IT offers two-way trunked radio service as an instant means of communication between staff, departments, and emergency assistance.

The Division of IT maintains the trunked radio system and the individual radios. University departments can rent radios just as if they rent telephones today. Contact the Division of IT for more information on how two-way trunked radio service can be customized to benefit your department.

Fees

Set-up fees and monthly charges apply for the two-way radio services. Radios come equipped with one battery and additional batteries are available for purchase. Depending on radio usage, the battery may fail and a replacement will be necessary. If a battery fails and must be replaced within a month of acquiring the service, the Division of IT will replace the battery at no charge.

Upon termination of service, a radio must be returned to the Division of IT with a working battery.

Availability

Fiscal officers and telecommunications coordinators should e-mail the Division of IT for set-up cost estimate, monthly recurring, or battery replacement charges. Telecom/IT Analysts are also available for service consultation.

Talk Groups

Radios can be programmed to have "talk groups", meaning that groups of radios can be programmed to appear as a private radio network even though they share a common radio system. You can have more than one talk group assigned to the radio. You can even scan several talk groups if needed.

The Division of IT has designed the trunked radio system with disaster recovery in mind. The system will provide emergency voice communications in the event of a total telephone system failure.
