Personal Digital Assistants and SmartphonesNeed to stay in touch, whether it is by voice or data? Want to get away from carrying a cell phone and laptop? Perhaps a combined cell phone and organizer (Smartphone) incorporating both functions is a good choice for you. A Smartphone provides capabilities beyond a mobile phone, including access to e-mail, calendar, contacts, and the internet and may eliminate the need to carry more than one device. A Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) may be a good choice if you essentially want a small handheld computer. PDAs offer a variety of personal productivity applications, such as e-mail, contacts, calendar and applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Deciding which device is right for you involves considering how you plan to use it, what you want to accomplish with it. You should certainly plan to visit several vendors to discuss price, data plans, and usability and productivity features. MU has a multi-vendor contract for departments, faculty, staff, and students to obtain a variety of wireless cellular services, including smart devices. The cellular vendors offer the MU community the best discounts available for corporate-liable or personal voice and data plans. Blackberry Service Notice
The Blackberry Exchange Server (BES) will be removed from service at 5:00 p.m., May 30.
The BES software is incompatible with Exchange 2007. The Division of IT is in the process of migrating to Exchange 2007 and wants to ensure that Blackberry users continue to receive mail as the migration progresses.
Current BES subscribers should work with their cellular provider to move to another solution. Two alternate e-mail solutions include: Windows Exchange/ActiveSync (which works natively with the University's Exchange environment) or the Blackberry Internet Service (which comes with every Blackberry smartphone and is activated with a data plan). Contact information for the cellular providers under contract with the University can be found on our cellular phone services page. Once you have successfully migrated to a new solution, please unsubscribe from the BES service by filling out the BES Unsubscribe form.

Choosing a PDA or SmartphoneSelecting the right smartphone/PDA for you depends on what you want to do with the device and how much you want to spend. As a rule, the greater the device's capability to communicate, the more expensive it is. Ask yourself a few questions BEFORE you talk to the sales representative so that you get a device that really fits your needs:
Choosing ServicesThe most important thing to do is to think about what services you really want access to, how accessible you need to be, and how you might use any particular device.
Access to University E-MailPlease refer to the smart device e-mail access page for University access options. You do not have to subscribe to a service through the University to access e-mail. You may use desktop redirection (where your desktop remains on at all times) to access your University e-mail from a smartphone, PDA or other device.
