Supported Software

The IT Help Desk provides assistance for centrally-supported software. Support for other software titles or older versions of the listed titles is limited or unavailable. For assistance with specialized academic software, contact your instructor.

As we are currently testing Internet Explorer 7, Office 2007, Windows Vista and Mac OS X Leopard, training and support are not yet available. Please see the Vista compatibility page for a list of applications that have been tested with Vista. Please see the Leopard compatibility page for a list of applications that have been tested with Leopard.

Note that we can support some applications more effectively through training. Supplementing support with training enables us to offer more software products than we can realistically support from the IT Help Desk alone. We have noted these applications below. For more information about software training courses, visit our IT training pages.

Up and Coming

We are considering the following applications for inclusion on the centrally-supported software list:
  • Adobe Photoshop Elements
  • Microsoft Windows Defender
  • EndNote
  • FileMaker
  • Reference Manager
  • R-Statistical Software for Windows, Macintosh OS 10.x and Linux

Unsupported Software

The Division of IT supports only software titles listed in the table above. For unsupported software, contact the manufacturer for assistance. Unsupported software includes (but is not limited to):
  • Recommended and supported software older than the two most recent versions
  • Freeware
  • Games
  • Microsoft Windows ME, NT, 98, 95 and 2000
  • Netscape

The Centrally-Supported Software Committee is responsible for evaluating software titles for inclusion or removal from this list. Recommendations are ultimately approved by the MU Information Technology Committee.

Windows 98

Microsoft only supports Windows 98 on a for-fee basis. The Division of Information Technology cannot easily get drivers and other software to support this operating system. We also find that the hardware running Windows 98 is so old, it is often not fixable or is more expensive to fix than the computer is worth.

We recommend the purchase of a computer capable of supporting Microsoft Windows XP. Faculty, staff, and students qualify for discounted rates on new computers through our Dell Premier Partnership.
