Running MU-Ready software, such as antivirus and spyware combatants, is the best way to protect your computer from vulnerabilities.
Fees and Availability
MU-Ready software is free. Download these programs from the MU-Ready software category on the Software Distribution Site.

- Symantec AntiVirus: Provides virus protection, spam prevention and content filtering. Free updates included.
- Cisco VPN: Provides a secure connection to resources on the MU network from off campus.
- Power Archiver: A file-compression program used to open and manipulate .zip files.
- Secure CRT: A secure terminal client for connecting to a server.
- Secure FX: A secure FTP client for transferring files between your local computer and a server.
- Spybot Search and Destroy: A utility for removing malicious adware and spyware from your computer.
- Print Anywhere: A utility for printing to Computing Sites printers from your personal computer.
Macintosh
- Norton AntiVirus CE: Provides virus protection, spam prevention and content filtering. Free updates included.
- Cisco VPN: Provides a secure connection to resources on the MU network from off campus.
- StuffIt Expander: Expands compressed or encoded files.
- Mac SFTP: Transfers files between your local computer and a server.
- Brown TN3270: Allows terminal emulation using the TN3270 application for Telnet purposes.

Virus and Spyware Removal
Symantec AntiVirus CE: Even if your computer is brand new, it can still be infected with viruses or spyware. Symantec AntiVirus CE software is free to students (including a subscription for future updates). Please install this version, even if you are already running antivirus software. It's available from the Software Distribution Site. Update your virus definitions regularly by using the free subscription service.
VirusAid is a set of tools to disinfect computers having viruses or spyware. You can pick up a free CD at TigerTech in Brady Commons or download a free copy of VirusAid from the Software Distribution Site. Due to licensing restrictions, VirusAid is only available to University of Missouri-Columbia users.
Maintaining Computer Software
The following is a short list of good software maintenance "rules of thumb" to keep your computer in good working condition:
- Install the latest versions.
- Avoid downloading free programs (they often contain spyware).
- Use a personal firewall.
- Regularly update your antivirus software.
- Keep your operating system patched and up to date.
