Make IT Safe: Holiday E-Shopping
Holiday E-Shopping Tips
With the holiday season rapidly approaching, many people turn to the Internet as an alternative to long lines and packed shopping malls. The popularity and convenience of online shopping increases every year.
For many people, being able to purchase gifts over the Web seems like the perfect solution to holiday headaches - you have plenty of choices, you can easily comparison shop, and you have the luxury of not having to leave your home or office.
However, online shopping does have its drawbacks. For example, returns and exchanges can be a pain due to shipping issues. It can also be more difficult to hold merchants accountable for problems you experience with your order.
The following are a few smart e-shopping tips can help minimize your troubles and ensure that you have a good online shopping experience.
- Know exactly what you're getting. Make sure you know what you're purchasing by reading the description thoroughly (and even e-mailing the company with questions if necessary). For example, online electronics purchases might not include a warranty.
- Check the delivery dates. Make sure you have in writing when you can expect the product to be delivered. Just because you're able to order quickly doesn't mean your gift will get delivered quickly!
- Be secure! When a Web page asks you for your credit card number, make sure that the URL starts with "https:". This means that the transaction is going to be conducted securely and you don't have to worry about people eavesdropping on your purchase and credit card information.
- Don't choose the option to store your credit card information on company Web sites! If you do this, you're depending on the company to maintain the security of your information - it takes a little longer to do but it is much safer to input your card number each time you order.
- Know from whom you're buying. This is particularly important with online auctions. Check the seller's feedback ratings and note any negative comments. Verify real-world information in possible, and try to obtain a name, address and phone number.
- Be aware of return policies. Some Web sites affiliated with stores allow you to return an online purchase to the store (such as Old Navy). Other companies require you to ship your merchandise back to a warehouse if a return is necessary (even if there's a local branch of the store right down the street). Also, note any restocking fees that may apply - these fees should be clearly visible on the Web site. Keep in mind that some products, such as DVDs or copyright materials may not be returnable.
- Keep detailed records of purchases. Keep copies of any e-mails you exchange with customer service representatives. Print out copies of your order, including order number and the products you purchased.
