Division of IT: Security
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) ProductsThe Division of IT issues two brands of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates to secure Web sites: UM/MU Secure and VeriSign. Both certificates operate at 128-bit for domestic browsers and 40-bit for non-domestic browsers.UM/MU Secure CertificatesUM/MU Secure certificates are ideal for Web servers accessed only by faculty and staff. UM/MU secure certificates are internally signed by Division of IT and offered at a fraction of the cost of the VeriSign certificates.FeesUM/MU secure certificates are available for $120 and valid for two years. A valid MU PawPrint and password is required to request a certificate.AvailabilityOrder online by completing the UM/MU secure certificate enrollment form.Root CertificatesWhen using an MU Secure certificate, a root certificate will need to be downloaded onto the browser. Please note that the process for an end-user acceptance of an MU Certificate in Firefox 3 is more complicated. We do not recommend and will not support its use for Firefox 3. Please consider using a VeriSign Certificate.VeriSign Secure CertificatesVeriSign certificates are purchased directly from VeriSign and re-sold through a UM contract. Departments cannot purchase certificates outside the UM contract. VeriSign certificates should be used on Web servers that conduct credit card or other monetary transactions or will be accessed by any non-University individuals. All VeriSign certificates must be registered in the form of host.missouri.edu. For example, a certificate can be registered to doit.missouri.edu, but not to www.doit.missouri.edu.Fees
