Wireless Network Expansion and Upgrade Status
The MU wireless network is in a constant state of change and many groups are requesting additional or upgraded wireless coverage for their locations. In addition, MU is in the process of upgrading the aging wireless infrastructure that has been in place for several years. Since it is going to take up to two years to complete the planned expansion and upgrades, priorities have to be set.
There are several lists of priorities. In many cases we will be able to work down multiple priority lists in parallel speeding up the overall project. There are three major priority areas for wireless network expansion and upgrades.
The highest priority for expansion is to provide wireless coverage in the common areas and lounges of the residence and dining halls. Coverage to student rooms is NOT planned at this time; student rooms have excellent wired data network connectivity today. This project is in process and we hope to have all of these areas covered by the end of the fall semester 2006. Residential Life has provided the Division of IT with a short list of high priority locations, the rest will be done in alphabetical order. New residential facilities will open with wireless coverage.

The second priority is to upgrade the older, less functional wireless components that exist on the network today. This will provide several benefits: it will provide for consistent feature-availability network-wide; increase the maximum communication speed from 11 to 54 Mbs; replace the old 802.11 b capable units with tri-mode 802.11 a/b/g technology; provide a higher density of wireless access points to improve coverage; add enhanced authentication methods; provide for improved security.
