The Division of IT manages the Domain Name Service (DNS) and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for the MU campus. Domain names identify Web sites. MU currently hosts more than 100 domains for various campus departments and student organizations. The Division of IT manages these domains at no charge. This protects the University's investment in the names, maintains continuous domain ownership, and ensures that domains do not accidentally expire. Internet Protocol (IP) addresses identify the unique address of each device attached. Printers and servers require static IP addresses.

Fees

Domain names are managed by domain name registrars. The Division of IT will coordinate the ownership, and renewal of these names with those organizations.

Domain name registry and renewal:* $10/year
Domain name hosting: No charge
Domain transfers (to the Division of IT): call for rates (includes 1 year renewal)
DNS requests: No charge
IP address requests: No charge
Non-emergency, after-hours requests: $50/hour (1 hour minimum)

Availability

To obtain new domain names within .missouri.edu, use the Network Address and Registration System (Your Departmental IT Professional may need to submit the request for you.)
To obtain new domain names outside .missouri.edu, use the domain name request form.
If you've already purchased a domain name and need to transfer it to another person or organization, use the network consulting request form to request a consultation on transferring maintenance of the domain.
To obtain static IP addresses, use the Network Address and Registration System (Your Departmental IT Professional may need to submit the request for you.)

Questions and Answers about DNS and IP

What's the difference between a domain and a DNS name?

Technically, none. However, a domain is usually referred to as the last two sections of the name that are registered, such as missouri.edu or yahoo.com. Compare that to a DNS name, which is longer, such as webmail.missouri.edu or mail.yahoo.com.

What if I already have a domain name?

If you've already purchased a domain name, use the network consulting request form to request a consultation on transferring maintenance of the domain.

Can I register a .com domain?

Yes. Use the domain name request form to request a .com, .org, or .net domain.

How long does it take to get a domain?

It typically takes about two days to get the domain fully registered and set up on the campus name servers. It helps to know what server will host your Web site ahead of time, since the Division of IT can set up those DNS names for you at the same time.

How many names can I have in my new domain?

As many as you like. The Division of IT does not charge for individual missouri.edu names.

What if I want to transfer my domain to someone else later?

If you wish to transfer your domain to someone else, the Division of IT will assist you in getting it transferred successfully with as little outage as possible. The only exceptions would be in the case of certain trademarked names. For instance, the Division of IT cannot transfer mizzou-rules.com, since the name Mizzou™ is a trademark owned by the University of Missouri.

How many IP addresses can I have assigned to me?

As many as you can use. Unused IP addresses are subject to un-assignment after 90 days of disuse. If this occurs, you will be notified at least once in advance and again when the IPs are removed.
