IT Professional Switch Offering

Support

Background

MU campus IT professionals use varying numbers of data network ports on a daily basis to perform functions such as the setup of new computers, troubleshoot problems, and build replacement servers. MU charges per Ethernet port to provide network access. This forces MU departments to either pay for Ethernet ports infrequently used or break the rules and place unauthorized network devices on the MU network. The Division of Information Technology has provided the IT Professional Switch service to resolve this issue with no financial penalty for the departments.

Service Definition

  • MU will provide a 24 port 10/100 Ethernet switch to each department for their IT professional to use. Very large departments with many IT professionals in different buildings may be eligible for multiple switches. For departments with multiple IT professionals in a single building we will provide one switch that would reside in a common work area. It is not intended that anyone considered an IT professional be automatically eligible for a switch. Our intent is for departments to have a reasonable way to provide for computer setup and troubleshooting without incurring unreasonable Ethernet port charges.
  • All 24 copper 10/100tx ports are active and available for use.
  • The department will pay for a single port on the production data network to act as an uplink port for the switch. There are no other charges for this service.

Acceptable Use Policy

  • The switch needs to keep its assigned management IP address. DoIT uses this for network management and auditing purposes.
  • The switch needs to remain on at all times so we can track and audit the switch for appropriate usage.
  • The switch needs to remain connected to its dedicated uplink port on the production network and not move around. The uplink port is tracked for appropriate multiple MAC address usage. Moving the switch to another port will result in the switch being flagged as an abuser and will result in action to remove the switch from the network.
  • No permanent computers allowed on the switch.
  • Permanent test and development systems are not temporary and require an additional dedicated active port.
  • DoIT reserves the right to block access to this device if it is the source of security violations or used to avoid appropriate port fees.

Who is Considered an IT Pro?

IT professionals, in the simplest terms, are MU staff whose primary work responsibilities are to provide computing support for an MU department. Among other tasks, an IT professional generally will support computer applications, administer servers, build and deploy new computers, troubleshoot computing problems and give computing related advice to their departmental users and leadership. On the MU campus, staff that function as IT professionals have various titles and job responsibilities. To be eligible for the switch service offering, the Division of IT manager of data networking must know that you function as an IT professional and have a need for the switch offering as defined.

How to Request the Service

  • Send an e-mail requesting the switch to the UMC Telecom Requests mailbox. You will need to provide a cable drop and room number that will determine the permanent location for the switch. The Division of IT uses the cable information to determine the switch port used as an uplink.
  • You will need to provide a MoCode for the uplink port if it is a new activation.
  • The Division of IT manager of data networking will need to approve the request. This may require communication between Division staff and the IT professional.
  • If approved a switch will be delivered and setup in two to three business days.
  • To return the switch to the Division, send an e-mail to the UMC Telecom Requests mailbox asking to return the particular switch.
