Account Creation & Activation

Student Accounts

A student UserID (SSO) consist of a student's initials and three random characters which ensure its uniqueness.

Activating your Student UserID

New students must activate their UserID and setup a strong password before the credential can be used. Most students create their password during Summer Welcome or as part of the admission process. If you have yet to create a University password, you may do so by accessing . You will need the "temporary" password which was mailed to you when you applied to the University. If you do not have your temporary password, go to and click on the Forgot Your Password link then click the Recover Password button. Follow the instructions to have your temporary password sent to you. To learn more about your password, including how to change or reset it, please refer to the password information page.

Faculty/Staff Accounts

A faculty/staff UserID usually consists of the employee's last name combined with initials. The IT Professional for each department or business unit is responsible for requesting faculty/staff UserID for all new faculty/staff members.

  • Columbia business unit: the departmental IT Pro (IT Pro) should request the new faculty/staff UserID using the DoIT request form. The IT Pro will need the new faculty/staff employee ID to make the request.
  • Schools of Medicine, Health Professions and Nursing: contact an IT Pro to request a new UserID.
  • MU Health Care-MUHC: staff accounts are already created via the new hire process. UMHC staff will receive their UserID (SSO) and password in new employee orientation.

Resource Accounts

Resource accounts are primarily used for departmental mailboxes, emails and calendars. Department IT Pro's can request resource accounts for their department by using the DoIT Account Request form.
