Division of IT: Policies

Shared Media Policy

The Division of Information Technology does not support the use of switches or hubs (shared media) on Mizzou TigerNet. In order to maintain a fast, reliable and secure network, the Division maintains control of the media with which the network is accessed.

Since upgrading to a gigabit backbone in 2000, the Division of IT is proud to offer 10/100 switched network access to the desktop. For the personal computer, this is a significant upgrade from 10 MB shared segments utilizing hub technology to 100 MB maximum switched access providing dedicated 100 MB of bandwidth to the desktop. Accessing the network via a switch port adds security and dedicated bandwidth to all computing services.

Switches and hubs can be rented for special events and circumstances through the Division of IT's MyServices application. Computers or other computing devices attached to switches or hubs which are not obtained from the Division of IT will be denied network access and a security incident will be issued.
